Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle, I want to ride my bicycle!!! Thinking of going to a single gear set up on my cheap target schwinn... not a fixed gear (ooo... my knees), but a single gear.
Don't know why I'm sharing, cycling's been on my mind alot lately!

May is Bike to Work month. The company I work for, being great, is sponsoring Bike to Work week next week and will be giving out goodies to employees that are participating. So this weekend, my husband got my bike out of storage and cleaned it all up and oiled it and got me a new seat. It's an old Muddy Fox bike, but it's still a great frame. I am looking forward to my ten mile ride to work next week. Who knows, if it goes smoothly, I just might be doing this more often.

I used to bike to work when it was about 6 miles out, to and fro.
But now I'm in downtown.. I'm getting burned out at the gym (after 4 years). But we are about 20 miles out. That's a good hour or so bike ride to work...
debating it though...

I can't bike to work, I gotta hull my work to work and back again and all the tools and supplies that go with it :( I prefer walking to biking though haha. I usually don't like anything with wheels, skateboards, roller blades...

A couple months ago I bought a Norco 12 speed from a garage sale and bought a single speed crank. It's sort of not really good to be honest...hills kill you. But I like the clean look. No wires or breaks or any of that jazz.
Tsuru- 05-12-2008
completely agree, that's the appeal, the clean lines.
I'd have to keep a break though, I've had too many near death experiences in my days to know to trust stopping in time to me peddling slower.
;)
Got some narrower tires and going to give her a good bath and oil her up proper and maybe do an early morning long bike ride before the trek to work...
clozeyoureyes- 05-12-2008
Ah man, just stop the crank and skid stop like you're 12 years old. I guess if you live in a busy city it would make sense to keep the front brake though. Post some pictures when you get it done!
Tsuru- 05-13-2008
well, here's right now...
;)
think I'm going for it tomorrow.... the long bike ride in. Wish me luck!
Tsuru- 05-13-2008
Alright... if I can get my ass out of bed early in the morning, I'm going for it.
17 miles.
about 1.25 hours... wish me luck!
Tsuru- 05-14-2008
Well, I did it. The route was about 17 miles, it's a cloudy, cool day with pending rain. Everything went really well, took the back streets from the downtown/Short North area to the bike path by the interstate, took that for a number of miles (actually came upon a deer, she saw me and ran and I was basically chasing her for a good few minutes before she ran off into someone's yard).
Took a wrong turn at the end of the bike path, after a while I looked up and saw downtown in the distance! Oh man, circled back and ultimately made a big 15 minute circle back to the bike path!
Oh well, got everything straight, and made it the rest of the way. With the "scenic tour", it was 1.5 hours and a really sore butt.
LOL.
That last fourth was pretty miserable, and I really cursed myself for making that wrong turn, but once I got to work, I felt pretty good that I accomplished something.
Not bad, for a first time on a shitty target schwinn....

Congrats! How often do you plan on cicyling to work? An hour and a half straight of riding would probably make you pretty sweaty, did the co workers comment, did you feel tired by the end of the day?

With no more "scenic detours", it should take me about 1.25 hours for now on. My goal right now will be 2 times a week (I'm doing it tomorrow with a friend).
As for sweaty, that's not a problem. I left early enough to get to the gym that's underneath our cafe here on the work campus. Came up, parked the bike, had a change of clothes in my back pack, hopped in the shower, and was fresh, clean, and super hungry... got some breakfast and went to my desk. Check, done!
:D

It's been really hot here - about 90-95 degrees the last few days. Today is official Bike To Work Day. My company, CamelBak, sets up hydration stations around town for people who are riding. I am not riding today because I have to leave work early to pick up my son. But I will be riding next week and hoping it cools down a bit by then!
Also, Tsuru, color me impressed you did it! I will report back next week on my ride. :D
Tsuru- 05-15-2008
CamelBak, eh? I might need some of that Elixir you sell for tomorrow.... I'm still feeling yesterday. Oof.
It's a lovely upper 60s low 70s the past few days, perfect for the bike.
Back when I used to ride to work (then it was about 7 miles) yeah, the heat waves we get in dead of summer can be brutal to bike in.... feel like you can't get any air!
Wish me luck tomorrow!

Alright.... today was a different day. It had been raining all night, got up nice and early and it looked like all was fine. Wind was blowing, drying things a little.
So I wander down stairs to get my coffee. Oh no.... I forgot to pick up filters! Tempted to call the whole thing off, but NO, I MUST PERSEVERE!
Used yesterday's filter (which I will never, do you hear me? NEVER do again!) and had some interesting coffee. Come 6:45, time to head out.
It was colder than I thought, around 45 degrees (F), and sprinkling and occasionally light showering. But I did it! It took 1 hr 20 minutes, and by the time I got to work, I was wet, freezing, and partially numb. It was exhausting, but man, when you get to work, you really feel like you accomplished something!
Good times.
Oh, made 2 adjustments to my shitty schwinn and one to my apparel for this morning.
1. Removed the front brake. Was dead weight anyway and I like the idea of a completely free wheel.
2. Put on a, uh, man-bits friendly seat. 360grams, with the cut out in the right places..
3. I bought padded biker shorts that I work UNDER my shorts (I'm sorry, I refuse to be all spandexed up commuting to work).
Changes #2 & #3....... Best adjustments ever. Wednesday I found myself really hurting, standing up as much as possible to relieve the pressure. Today, I was able to stay seated (I have my seat up really high for a good leg extension), and it was no problem at all.
Instead of fighting through that, I just had to fight through fatique, body aches, coldness, wetness, numbness in the hands, wind, and rain.
But today... I had a secret weapon. Island's Arm's Way! WOOP! It's a long album so barely had to repeat any songs... FAN-TASTIC!
;)
Good times......
