Opening bands vs. Headliners... I have no idea how many times the opening band has stolen the show for me... I was thinking about it a bit recently, then it dawned on me, even when I was a kid and saw Duran Duran and The Pursuit Of Happiness opened for them, to when about 2 years ago when Split Lip Rayfield opened for Reverend Horton Heat.
The gusto opening acts give man....

Doesn't really count, because it was sort of a joint headliner thing, but Sunset Rubdown opening for Xiu Xiu. Xiu Xiu were ok, but half the crowd left after SR, and the change in atmosphere was pretty depressing.

Haha, I went to see Radiohead at the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland with the opening act being Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. By the time I got there the place was packed and we had to sit up on top of the hill without a very good view of the stage. So Stephen and his Jicks took to the stage, and played a great set. Having never heard them before I was an instant fan.
So they finished their set and and while i was discussing them with my friends I overheard some people who were sitting behind me.
"They were really good live!"
"I told you! Radiohead is great live"
"They sound a lot differant on their cds though."
"it's a totally differant experience seeing them live."
"I guess so!"
They then preceeded to gather their blankets and LEAVE!

I saw the police recently, and Stings kids band played opening slot, ficton plane or something like that.
FP were amazing, really tight, energetic and they rocked the whole arena.
The police, on the other hand, seemed to be merely going through the motions, to steal a phrase, no energy at all.

I was really hyped to see The Roots, but Cody ChesnuTT completely stole the show as the opener, then proceeded to come back out with The Roots (Seed 2.0) and stole the show again.
