Haha. Yeah, I'm starting to see that. I'm enjoying the book, though.

Tsuru- 05-11-2008

Yeah, it was really good.... I've been really bad about reading lately.

I liked the Junot Diaz book too, but not sure its deserving of all the awards it has won  Currently reading Unbound by Julie Kaewert, part of a series of bibliomysteries by this author. I tried to pick up "Unbound" this weekend, but Barnes and Noble told me it's out of print. I hit a used book store, but the owner, a fellow bibliomystery fan, had it, but had taken it home. I'll try some on-line shops.... In the meantime he recommended 2 other bibliomystery series: "Dewey Decimated" by Charles A. Goodrum, and "Death on Demand" by Carolyn G. Hart.

Thanks! I have both of those already. They're very good. I've been a fan of bibliomysteries for a long time. I have 4 of 7 the Julie Kaewert titles and should look on-line for the 3 that I'm missing. John Dunning is very good too - Booked to Die (1992) ISBN 0-684-19383-3 The Bookman's Wake (1995) ISBN 0-684-80003-9 The Bookman's Promise (2004) ISBN 0-7432-4992-5 The Sign of the Book (2005) ISBN 0-7432-5505-4 The Bookwoman's Last Fling (2006) ISBN 0-7432-8945-5

"Cat's Cradle" Kurt Vonnegut. Just got into it last night and loving One of my five favorite books. Have you read Slaughterhouse 5? Must. Control. Vonnegut fanboyism.

About 1/4 through. I just started that as well. Incredibly bleak, but i'm enjoying his writing, I haven't read McCarthy before. Haven't really had the kid getting on my nerves yet but we'll see....

"Cat's Cradle" Kurt Vonnegut. Just got into it last night and loving One of my five favorite books. Have you read Slaughterhouse 5? Must. Control. Vonnegut fanboyism. Yes, I read it for English 12 and I loved it too. It would be a good place to start tsurubride! Or Cat's Cradle :D

My personal ranking of Vonnegut: 1. Slaughterhouse 5 2. Bluebeard (extremely beautiful...one of the best books about being a person) 3. Cat's Cradle 4. Galapagos (just a personal favorite, can't explain it) 5. Sirens of Titan (very sci-fi) 6. Player Piano (probably his most traditional novel) 7. Welcome to the Monkey House (short stories, Harrison Bergeron is the first thing I ever read) 8. Timequake (later period, but could be Kilgore Trout's best moments) 9. Jailbird 10. Mother Night (also a pretty good movie) 11. Deadeye Dick 12. God Bless You Mr. Rosewater The rest are decent but not worth obsessing over. Especially to be noted is the relative terribleness of Breakfast of Champions. Vonnegut's own rankings (from Palm Sunday): * Player Piano: B * The Sirens of Titan: A * Mother Night: A * Cat's Cradle: A-plus * God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater: A * Slaughterhouse-Five: A-plus * Welcome to the Monkey House: B-minus * Happy Birthday, Wanda June: D * Breakfast of Champions: C * Slapstick: D * Jailbird: A * Palm Sunday: C Vonnegut is slowly being challenged by Philip Roth as best overall career, and by Ken Kesey for best single novels.

I like that he ranked his own books. I thikn all authors, and especially actors and directors should do that with movies!

Eldoon- 05-12-2008

Just finished Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman over the weekend. I've been on a huge Klosterman kick in the past month, and ended up reading all of his books (most in the span of 1-3 days.) While I think Klosterman is plenty funny and insightful most of the time, he usually comes off as if his opinions are the end-all-be-all and that no other line of thinking is acceptable. This tends to get really frustrating to read whenever he makes a completely dubious assessment (for instance, in one chapter of the book, he tries vehemently to defend sexism in hair metal, ultimately copping out the blame on 80s culture and not on the sexist bands or fans themselves.) But overall, it was a pretty funny read, although it's my least favorite CK book. ...I keep intending on picking up/reading some Vonnegut (and Gore Vidal, and tons others) but I always end up getting rock star biographies (usually anything with Joe Strummer on the cover.) Sigh. So it goes...
