interesting list... give him some ball-points for not putting Nirvana at #1, and not putting pearl jam, soundgarden or whatever..
seems like he's trying a bit to make it surprising... Waits and alt-rock? Hmm..

Blah, this is a controversy-baiting list...why is The Fall even on there? O_o
Tsuru- 06-05-2008
my #1 album of 08 is going to be Britney (that was this year, right?)

too many wrongs with this list - like why include both Dino Jr and Sebadoh, pick one or the other, and the Breeders should not be on the list, nor Cracker or the lead singer of The Screaming Trees. Guided by Voices should have been higher up because they are the quintessential 90's band (thank god they beat out Nirvana). Personally, as much as I love Mark Kozelek, number two is pushing it I think, however, rollercoaster RHP is so terribly gorgeous and different from things that were going on at the time that I suppose it makes sense to see him so high up there. Where are the math rock bands on this list, like Slint, Don Cabalero or Tortoise? I'm on a Built To Spill kick presently, so I would have liked to see them on the list because they are amazing and released great records like Perfect From now On in the '90's. Weezer beating out Pavement is rather funny, seeing as Weezer wouldn't even exist were it not for Pavement (sorry Tsuru), just like Pavement would not exist were it not for The Fall. Thank goodness this listmaker didn't forget to include the invincible P.J Harvey, because she made Liz Phair look like a 'good' girl back in the ninties.

I don't know how they can use words "best" "alternative", "bands" and "1990's" without:
Jane's Addiction
(among many others) but because what is someone's definition of "alternative"? The radio stations all went "alt-rock" only after Nirvana and Lollapalooza became house-hold names.
Now, these aren't my personal faves, but what about:
Smashing Pumpkins
Primus
Tool
Helmet
Ween
311
G-Love & Special Sauce
???
at least they didn't mention:
spin doctors, lisa loeb, or collective soul. Those were the radio-friendly 'alt' bands.

he should've added a boy band, just to get everyone even more aggitated!

like: N Sink - they were big in the 90's... weren't they?
or maybe Hanson was alternative: Mmmm Bop anyone?
still wondering why they forgot:
GreenDay (remember when they were 'alternative'?)
this list is just another example of how pitchfork has ruined the world....
here's the best example:

Oh man, Hanson would've been a good one, could act like they were a real "alternative" to pop, or something..... lol!
and that article... lol!

lmao, the Onion is always great! Skewered those Pitchfork aholes a new one.
Great list, Gud! Those are all must haves.

I'm sorry, and possibly a bit obsessive, but i keep thinking of more bands they left off.
Radiohead!!!?
wasn't 'Ok Computer' like one of the biggest alternative music albums of the 90's?
and until someone proves why Giant Sand and American Music Group are on there, i'm boycotting Yahoo-anything. wait- i never yahoo anything anyway. oh well- it's still a protest!

Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly!
It seems like this list was just some kind of ego-booster for the writer.
"HEY GUYS CHECK OUT MY EXCELLENT TASTE IN 'ALT-ROCK' FROM THE 90s!!11" XD
I mean, shoot, even those awful Rolling Stone lists are more fair than this.
